John is a seasoned Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over four decades of experience in developmental clinical psychology, specializing in working with children, adolescents, and families. He holds a Master’s Degree in Developmental Clinical Psychology from Antioch University and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Florida.
John's expertise spans private practice, community mental health services, and leadership in behavioral health organizations. As the co-founder and former Deputy Executive Director of Success 4 Kids & Families, John played a pivotal role in expanding the agency, securing funding, and overseeing community-based programs and services. His work includes extensive experience with juvenile justice, child welfare, and mental health systems, where he provided clinical supervision, consultation, and training in areas such as Motivational Interviewing and High Fidelity Wraparound.
He has worked as an expert consultant for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and continues to provide consulting, training, and peer coaching through his private practice, John Mayo LMHC, LLC. In addition to his professional practice, John is a published author, contributing to numerous publications on mental health, system of care, and family preservation.
John remains actively involved in mental health advocacy through memberships in organizations such as the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association, American Mental Health Counselors Association, and NAMI Sarasota/Manatee.
